The Quiet Isn’t Empty: How to Trust the Waiting Season

I am writing this from a local winery with a glass of wine nearby, soulful music playing in the background, and absolutely nothing happening inside my brain.

At least, that is how it feels.

From the outside, my life is overflowing with possibility. I have proposals awaiting decisions, gallery walls waiting to be filled, creative opportunities taking shape, and some very big personal dreams hovering just beyond my reach.

I have done the work. I have taken the risks. I have laid every log carefully on the fire.

Now I am waiting for the wind to catch the sparks—and I am discovering that I am not nearly as patient as I thought I was.

A beautiful sky with orange clouds and warm sun.

When Waiting Becomes Uncomfortable

I have always considered myself a patient person. I had tremendous patience for my students during more than 30 years of teaching. I have learned patience through complicated health challenges, changing plans, and the slow, winding path of life.

But waiting for my own dreams to land feels entirely different.

There is a particular tension in the space between doing everything we can and discovering what happens next. We cannot work harder to produce an answer that belongs to someone else. We cannot force the right opportunity to arrive before it is ready. We cannot micromanage life into following our preferred timeline—although goodness knows some of us give it a heroic try.

That lack of control can leave us restless, unfocused, and strangely empty. We begin to mistake quiet for stagnation.

How to Trust the Waiting Season

As I sat at the winery listening to music and trying to summon words that refused to appear, a thought rose through the mental fog:

The quiet space is not empty. It is percolating.

Seeds do not sprout the moment we place them in the soil. Long before we see anything above ground, roots are forming in the darkness.

Embers can appear still while holding an extraordinary amount of heat. One breath of wind can awaken what seemed dormant into a brilliant flame.

Perhaps the waiting season works the same way.

Trusting the waiting season does not require us to pretend that uncertainty is comfortable. It means recognizing that a lack of visible movement is not proof that nothing is happening.

Conversations continue after we leave the room. Ideas develop. Connections form. Decisions unfold. We grow strong enough to receive the very things we have been asking for.

Not all progress announces itself with fireworks.

What Painting Has Taught Me About Patience

My intuitive painting practice repeatedly asks me to remain present during uncertainty.

I often begin without knowing what the completed painting will become. I make a mark, add a layer, step back, and listen. Some passages resolve quickly. Others require me to leave the canvas alone until I can see it differently.

If I force an answer because I am impatient, I frequently paint over something that needed more time—not more effort.

This philosophy is woven throughout my series, Through Me: Where Wonder Finds a Way. The paintings emerged when I stopped trying to control every outcome and became willing to listen, receive, and allow.

Painting reminds me that the pause is part of the process. What appears unresolved may still be gathering the energy it needs to become something extraordinary.

The same may be true of our lives.

The Embers Are Still Burning

When we are waiting for our dreams, the temptation is to poke constantly at the fire. We add another log, rearrange everything, blow harder, and wonder why the flame has not arrived.

Sometimes action is necessary. Sometimes we need to send the email, submit the proposal, or take the next brave step.

But eventually, we reach the point where our work is complete and our task changes. We are no longer being asked to push. We are being asked to trust.

That does not come easily to me. I am still learning to sit beside the fire without trying to control the wind.

I am learning that patience is not passive. It is an active decision to remain open without demanding immediate proof that everything will work out.

An Invitation to Stay Open

If you are sitting in the quiet waiting room of your own dreams, I hope you will remember this:

The quiet is not empty.

Something may be taking root beneath the soil. The answer may be moving toward you in ways you cannot yet see. The embers may be glowing more brightly than you realize.

Continue tending what is yours to tend. Take the next step when it becomes clear. But do not mistake a quiet chapter for a finished story.

The wind will come.

Until then, let us trust the waiting season, protect the spark, and remain open to the possibility that what is gathering may be even more beautiful than what we originally planned.

What dream or goal are you currently waiting on? I would love to hear about it in the comments so we can hold space for one another’s sparks. 🩵
